Help Make A Difference

Your donation keeps the lights on, and directly helps to improve the wildland fire community that we serve

To all federal wildland firefighters and the grassroots wildland firefighter movement,

The Grassroots Wildland Firefighters formed in late 2019 to advocate for systematic change and a paradigm shift in the working conditions that federal wildland firefighters face as fire seasons have now transitioned into fire years.

The Grassroots Wildland Firefighters are an all-volunteer group of current, retired, and resigned federal wildland firefighters. Grassroots Wildland Firefighters are actively engaged in conversations with multiple legislative staffs, senior agency management, and local and national media outlets. Our efforts and relationships take hundreds if not 1,000s of hours of volunteer time. In the early days of Grassroots Wildland Firefighters advocacy efforts we were completely self-funded. We have added the ability to collect donations, and these donations have assisted in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, travel expenses to Washington D.C. for congressional testimony, social media and newsletter support, legal representation, and miscellaneous expenses.

Grassroots is in the final stages of obtaining our federal 501c3 non-profit designation and intends to increase our advocacy efforts as we grow and formalize the Grassroots Wildland Firefighter organization into one that has longevity well into the future. Grassroots Wildland Firefighters is proud to present our Strategic Plan for growth and sustainability and a consistent membership plan to assist in funding our advocacy efforts. Grassroots Wildland Firefighters will not withhold information regardless of membership status – we are committed to advocating for and assisting all federal wildland firefighters. The Grassroots efforts will be your efforts.

Membership fees will go towards maintaining our website and self-advocacy tools, fund trips to Washington D.C., and maintain the infrastructure needed to ensure that the Grassroots Wildland Firefighters are positioned to maintain our ability to work with legislative representatives and agency personnel. In addition, Grassroots will be recruiting and hiring an executive director to assist with our day-to-day operations and ensure that we are staying true to our mission.

To all who have used our website to educate themselves, donated time and money, and spread the word to family and friends, THANK YOU!!. We have seen some historic and positive changes, but the work has only just begun. Grassroots will be here for the long haul and continue to advocate for accurate classification, pay, comprehensive health and well being. Grassroots will continue to advocate for a working environment that provides the tools necessary to see wildland personnel successfully navigate their career from hire to retire.

Where does your donation go?

  • Direct contact with legislators

We occasionally fly someone to DC when it is warranted to testify or make connections.

  • Expanding our Operations

Although our board is comprised solely of volunteers, as we expand we will need management with paid positions such as an Executive Director and Development Coordinator. We have advocates who are working voluntarily to help our legislative efforts, in the future we’d like to pay them.

  • Legal Fees

Yes, we have been threatened with lawsuits, but our main legal fees are making sure we have liability insurance and we keep up with IRS requirements for 501(C)3 status.

  • Newsletter

We use mailchimp to send our newsletters, letting our members know about important updates.

  • Information Campaigns

We use a third-party subscription service to manage our outreach campaigns. These campaigns target legislators and other leaders to educate and show support for our mission.

  • Website

We have recurring fees for web development and maintenance

  • Media Relations

Firefighters would always wonder why the news stories didn’t tell the right story correctly. That has changed as we work with national and local media to get the stories right.
